The Learning Support Department at The Frances Bardsley Academy for Girls is a busy department and is continually working hard to support our students within the school.
We have a team based in the Brentwood Road Gallery, with members of staff holding individual responsibilities and specialist roles, such as supporting certain areas of the curriculum or acting as a key worker for students. We work well together and offer a whole-school support network to the rest of the teaching and support staff within the school. Our SENCO offers training and advice to other members of teaching staff, so they feel better equipped to support our SEND students in classes.
We work closely with external support staff within the area and with surrounding schools, in particular primary schools, to ensure smooth transitions for students leaving Year 6 and joining our Year 7, which can be a very daunting and worrying time for them.
Although our main aim is to be a fully inclusive school and therefore attempt to keep most students in regular lessons, we appreciate that some students have additional needs which cannot be met if they follow the curriculum. Therefore, in addition to the general provision of in-class support, we offer 1:1 learning support and small group work. Students may find that they benefit more from extra individual support on a 1:1 basis for spellings, memory work, social skills, handwriting, mentoring, behaviour support and EAL support, all of which are available.
Our SENDCo is also our Head of Inclusion and Deputy Safeguarding Officer. She works closely with the our WYSE Manager to support the emotional wellbeing and positive mental health of our students. We realise that our students with a Special Educational Need face challenges in their daily lives which require additional support and interventions .
